New Moss boss to review pharmacy's retail offer

Moss Pharmacy has appointed Terry Scicluna as operations director to review its UK retail offer and investigate opportunities for expanding in-store health-related services.

Scicluna replaces Simon Hulme, who moves to the role of human resources director. A new head of retail operations, Chris Brown, is being drafted in from Spencer Gifts, the Canadian retail arm of Universal Studios. He will assume responsibility for day-to-day performance of Moss branches.

Scicluna said: 'I will be reviewing the Moss Pharmacy offering and looking at sales, in particular where we can maximise our retail potential.

'I will also be investigating opportunities such as expanding the professional services already available in store.'

Former Crazy George's managing director Scicluna has 20 years' experience in the retail and logistics sector, and joins Moss on the eve of the DTI's verdict on pharmacy licence deregulation.

Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt has already indicated she does not support the Office of Fair Trading's call for full deregulation, which would have been the worst-case scenario for industry players like Moss.

With 800 outlets, Alliance Unichem-owned Moss is the third-largest chemist chain in the UK, after Boots The Chemist and Lloydspharmacy, and would have much to lose if supermarkets were allowed to enter the fray unchecked.

A formal response from the DTI is expected before the House of Commons goes into recess on July 17.
