New Look seeks design director

New Look is understood to be searching for a design director to inject creative flair into the business.

The retailer recently restructured its design operation to ensure the buying and design teams worked more closely together. Design is headed by group buying and merchandising director Janet Biggs.

New Look head of design Vicky Watkins reports to Biggs, while company founder Tom Singh oversees the buying and merchandising side on an executive level.

A source close to the retailer said the team had strong commercial experience, and that it was searching for someone to give design more prominence.

According to the source, the new director would dictate trends, develop a design strategy and bolster seasonal forecasting. It is thought that the post would be in addition to the existing head of design role held by Watkins.

New Look marketing director Hash Ladha denied that the retailer was looking for a design director. 'We have restructured our business and strengthened our buying and design teams,' he said.

New Look recently picked Andy King as its head of menswear, a role created to spearhead the roll-out of menswear to 30 stores.

Singh took the retailer private earlier this year in a£700 million deal backed by venture capitalists Permira and Apax.
