Discount supermarket chain Netto is considering launching a limited online offer within two years as part of plans to create a £1 billion UK business.
The Danish grocer is mooting an online launch for high volume items. The retailer has a web offer in place as part of its German operation already.
Netto UK managing director Richard Lancaster said: “Internet shopping is on the agenda, but probably not for about 18 months. Our German business does well for higher volume items and it is some-thing we are discussing here.”

Lancaster said Netto will make improvements to the grocer’s in-store offer before considering an online push. This year it is rolling out a series of new store elements, including tobacco kiosks, greetings cards, mobile phone top-up facilities and ATM machines.

“Netto stores have radically improved from what they looked like two years ago and we have started introducing new elements to give our customers a full supermarket offer,” said Lancaster.

Netto is also testing a Food to Go offer in 10 stores, offering sandwiches and drinks. The trial is “showing good signs”, according to Lancaster and is set to be rolled out to high footfall stores later this year.

Netto has opened seven stores out of a targeted 20 this year. Next year, it plans to open 25.

The retailer will consider acquiring a package of Somerfield stores from new owner Co-operative Group when they go on the market, in addition to the 25 slated to open already.
