N Brown has revealed it is still on the acquisition trail and has appointed a new group development director to bolster growth.

Chief executive Alan White said: “We are still keen to make acquisitions, but the list is much smaller. Opportunities might arise because of tough market conditions. The core business is doing well, so in the meantime we can still deliver growth organically.”

In November, N Brown bought women’s clothing business Nightingales out of administration.

White is quietly confident about trading this year, despite the fragile consumer spending environment. He said: “This year, we are being more cautious about the amount of stock [we buy], which we were more bullish about last year. If we shut ourselves out from the outside world, we would be very bullish. We have the best customer base that we have had for the last 10 years.”

Paul Kendrick joins as group development director from the Co-operative Bank and will be integral to the group’s business development, including any potential acquisitions.

For the 20 weeks to January 12, like-for-like sales rose 14 per cent and online sales rocketed 48 per cent.

Separately, the group will launch its first TV ad campaign for its Jacomo men’s brand in spring. The brand launched last year.
