Sofa specialist Multiyork is to test four different sized new-format stores in an effort to clarify its offer and drive sales.

This month, the retailer will open a store at Lakeside in Thurrock and redesign existing stores in Milton Keynes and Newbury. This follows the relocation and redesign of its Solihull store, which opened earlier this year and has a mezzanine level for sister company Feather & Black.

The four stores will test a lifestyle-led format. Sofas and accompanying furniture will be laid out in roomsets with the aim of inspiring customers. The product will be displayed according to three styles – traditional, country living, and modern – and there will also be a distinct area to showcase Multiyork’s Create My Sofa area, where customers can choose from a range of covers, fillings, styles, shapes and feet.

Multiyork chief executive Peter Mallinson said: “We make about 1,000 pieces of furniture a week and each one is different. This is what makes us unique and we need to get that message over more clearly to our customers.”

Mallinson is confident the new format will be rolled out to its 61-store portfolio.

Multiyork wants to expand by about 15 stores in the next two to three years.
