Amazon has opened a development centre in East London, in an area home to many tech start-up companies that has been dubbed ‘Silcon Roundabout’.
The etailer has situated the office there because the capital is “brimming with world class technology talent”, said Amazon’s Paula Byrne, who is running the centre.
Amazon will create 100 jobs at the office, which is focused around services such as its Lovefilm business, and is moving some of its existing staff to the 47,000 sq ft, eight-floor building.
The opening was welcomed by London Mayor Boris Johnson. He said: “It’s fantastic to welcome Amazon’s new tech hub to London, giving the capital yet another vote of confidence from the world’s leading innovators.
“Boosting London’s tech and media workforce is key to driving the capital’s economy and helping to create jobs and growth.”
Byrne said: “We are now looking for the most innovative and creative people to join us in designing and developing the next generation of TV and film services for a global audience.”
