Moss Bros non-executive chairman David Adams will work with the menswear retailer’s management to drive sales, ending speculation that chief executive Philip Mountford will be forced to step down.

Adams, who was appointed to the role this week, told Retail Week: “I am really looking forward to working with Philip. There is no reason for him to move on.”

Adams remains Jessops executive chairman and said he will concentrate on driving the trading strategy in place already at the retailer.

Moss Bros shareholders welcomed Adams’ appointment, which follows the June departure of Keith Hamill, who stepped down after the failed£40 million takeover bid by Icelandic investment giant Baugur.

Baugur board member Don McCarthy, who spearheaded Baugur’s takeover of House of Fraser when Adams was finance director, said he was “very supportive” of the appointment.

Founding family member David Moss said he had “every confidence” that Adams was the right choice to “steer and drive” the business.
