Department store sales up 14.3 per cent
John Lewis has reported strong trading at its department store business, with sales up 14.3 per cent like for like for the week ending March 25.

Sales at supermarket arm Waitrose were down by 4.6 per cent compared with the same period in 2005, although the comparable period last year included the Easter week. Despite a downturn in like-for-likes, this week was Waitrose's strongest so far this year.

Mothers' Day provided a significant lift for both businesses. Electronics and home technology remain top sellers at John Lewis department stores, but childrenswear performed badly.
