Mothercare to revamp windows

Shop windows at Mothercare will receive a facelift with the arrival of Steve Perry as head of visual merchandising.

His appointment coincides with the revamp of eight stores carrying an edited product range, as the maternity retailer tries to turn around its high street business.

Perry joined last week from Primark, where he was visual merchandising manager. He also held similar roles at Debenhams, Top Shop and Bhs.

Reporting to strategic development director Steve Pomfret, Perry will ensure that shop windows are more inviting and store layout more welcoming.

'We need to bring a bit more flair to the way we lay out our stores,' said a spokeswoman.

Mothercare's flagship at Marble Arch has already received some of the changes, which include tables near the entrance displaying products and baskets full of toys.

The first of the eight revamped stores - the style is dubbed 'Superlite' - opened in Stafford on Tuesday. Shops including Reading, Wimbledon, Northampton, Glasgow, Cambridge, Ilford and Birmingham will be updated by October 28.

They form the second phase of Mothercare's trial of its high street formats.

'This is the second generation of pilot stores in which we are trying to get our high street offer right. From spring onwards, the optimum store will be rolled out,' said the spokeswoman.
