Mothercare signs key execs to steer recovery push

Mothercare, the maternity retailer in the midst of a turnaround programme, has appointed two key executives.

Gillian Berkmen begins as product director today, replacing Steve Pomfret, who was promoted in June to the role of strategic development director. Meanwhile, Tony Carr will replace Vince Gunn as retail operations director on September 22.

A Mothercare spokeswoman said the appointments would be pivotal to the retailer's recovery push. 'It's about having our best people with the right skills to maximise the turnaround,' she said.

Berkmen joins from MW Group, where she was on the main board as group buying director. She has previously worked at Miss Selfridge, where she was buying and merchandising director, as well as Bhs, River Island and Burton.

Carr was previously retail operations director at Dixons. He also worked in operations roles at Next, Burton and WHSmith, and will be involved in Mothercare's ongoing trial of two new store types.
