A mystery investor in Moss Bros has been identified as property and retail trader Paul Singh.

Singh placed a£4 million spread bet in 2000 or 2001 on shares in Moss Bros rising, giving him exposure to the equivalent of 8 per cent of shares in the menswear retailer.

Singh, who is a property developer and owner of Afro-Caribbean hair product distributor Beauty Star, was forced to reveal his position under new Takeover Panel rules.

The exposure is understood to be stretched between a number of City spread betting firms.

Icelandic investor Baugur is circling Moss Bros with a 42p-a-share approach for the retailer, in which it has a 29 per cent stake.

Yesterday, Baugur divested all but its retail portfolio, creating a£430 million war chest for further investments in the retail sector.
