Supermarket giant Morrisons is to open a new distribution centre at Sittingbourne in Kent, with the creation of 1,000 jobs.

The centre will be located at a new development site close to the M2 known as G -Park.

In 2006, Morrisons sold its distribution centre at Aylesford in Kent with the loss of 1,200 jobs.

Morrisons has agreed to take a 20-year lease on the large-scale warehouse complex, which will be used to service and supply its Southeast stores.

Morrisons spokesman James Brook said: “It will enable us to better service our growing business.” He added that the site had been selected because of its strategic location and close links to the motorway network.

Included in the plans for the site are environmentally friendly measures that generate power from every vehicle moving in and out of the site.

The distribution centre will also feature other eco-aware measures, including rainwater harvesting, energy efficient lighting, and low water use appliances.
