Last-minute attempt to avoid strikes
Morrisons has backed down in its dispute with two trade unions in an attempt to prevent a three-day strike. Industrial action could cut the retailer's distribution capacity by up to 60 per cent.

The planned strikes are in response to the proposed closure of three UK distribution premises. Members of the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) and the GMB voted for a stoppage last week.

While the unions have not yet called off the strike, Morrisons hopes to avert any action by agreeing to joint national bargaining.

T&G national officer Brian Revell warned: 'This is a positive move but very much a first step in what could be a long process.'

The talks are aimed at preventing a three-day walkout from Friday and a six-day stoppage from September 29. However, union officials said no decision regarding the strike would be taken until after tomorrow's meeting.
