Monsoon to build on superstore success

Fashion chain Monsoon plans two more superstores this year, following the success of its Marble Arch and Bullring shops.

Monsoon chief executive Rose Foster said the existing big stores, measuring 4,700 sq ft (435 sq m) and 7,100 sq ft (660 sq m) respectively, had traded well.

'They have taken us into a new era. We needed to develop new ranges to fill the space. For the year ahead, I'd like to see two or three of those kinds of stores,' said Foster.

Openings will be dependent upon finding suitable locations.

Monsoon also revealed plans to expand abroad via acquisitions. Foster would not reveal details, but the investment would use up a 'significant part of the company's cash resources'. Net funds at the end of November totalled£38.1 million.

Monsoon's sales for the six months to November 29 jumped 22 per cent to£131.1 million. Pre-tax and exceptionals profit surged 14 per cent to£21 million. Like-for-likes were up 2 per cent over Christmas.
