Specialist electricals retailer Maplin has added to its multichannel offering with the launch of a transactional iPhone app, allowing customers to browse and shop for more than 15,000 products.

The app is certainly an improvement on its mobile-optimised website. All the basics are there including product search, latest prices, store locator and alerts to special offers. Despite the huge number of products listed, the categorisation means it’s easy to find what you’re looking for and product pages contain plenty of information, although out-of-stock items are not highlighted as such until the customer begins the checkout process.

The payment options are clearly highlighted within the app and assurances are made about safety – something that is often overlooked and could lead to nervous customers abandoning their basket. Overall, this is a good app, but there is scope to include features such as customer reviews and an in-store stock checker in a future release.
