The retailer said: 'We are conducting a thorough investigation with our supplier to find out how this happened. We have also informed the Food Standards Agency and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and are working closely with them.'
The two affected products were Piquillo Pepper Topped Houmous and Reduced fat Houmous, both labelled use by February 15, which were immediately withdrawn from sale.
The retailer said as an extreme precaution they have also removed all unaffected M&S houmous products while they conduct investigations and are satisfied the products meet their standards.
No customer complaints or reports of illness have been received, the retailer added.
Customers with Marks & Spencer houmous products can return them to any store to receive a full refund.
