Marks & Spencer has partnered with Oxfam to create a one day event where customers can donate unwanted clothing into M&S stores to raise £1m for the charity.
The retailer already runs the M&S and Oxfam Clothes Exchange, where customers drop off unwanted M&S clothing into Oxfam stores to help to reduce the amount of clothing sent to landfill sites.
The ‘One Day Wardrobe Clearout’, on September 8, will allow customers to donate unwanted M&S clothing to the retailer’s stores in return for a £5 money-off voucher to spend in-store.
The initiative is being fronted by M&S model Lisa Snowden. Model David Gandy, presenter Tess Daly and M&S models including Twiggy and Dannii Minogue have donated clothes which will be sold on Oxfam’s online shop at www.oxfam.org.uk/MandS.
M&S chairman Sir Stuart Rose said: “By doing something as simple as dropping off your unwanted clothes at our stores you can help reduce the one million tonnes of clothing sent to landfill in the UK each year and generate important funds for Oxfam. Recycling your clothes is certainly the right thing to do environmentally, but it can also help you clear out some clutter and give your wardrobe a new lease of life.”
David McCullough director of trading at Oxfam said the charity’s partnership with M&S had raised £3m so far.
