Manchester city shopping boss goes to Trafford

The head of retail in Manchester city centre has defected to the nearby Trafford Centre. Gordon McKinnon will replace Steve Bunce as director of operations at the out-of-town centre in Dumplington, Salford.

One of McKinnon's biggest tasks will be to oversee the opening of the John Lewis store at the Trafford Centre in summer next year.

Bunce has been headhunted by Capital Shopping Centres for the post of centre manager at the Chapelfield shopping centre in Norwich, which is due to open in September next year.

Retailers in Manchester are thought to be disappointed that McKinnon, who has spent several years trying to offset the impact of the Trafford Centre on the city centre, has left his position as chief executive of the Manchester City Centre Management Company (MCCMC).

MCCMC director Cllr Pat Kaney said: 'He (McKinnon) was part of the very power-ful Manchester team that turned the city centre around and made Manchester one of the best shopping areas in the UK.'
