Majestic Wine has posted strong profits and robust sales for the 26 weeks ending October 1.

The retailer delivered pre-tax profits up 16.7 per cent to£7.5 million over the half-year, compared with£6.5 million last year. Its total sales rose 3 per cent to£91 million, on a UK like-for-likes rise of 2.4 per cent.

Majestic Wine chairman Simon Burke said that sales slowed between mid-June and the end of July because of the wet summer, but picked up after that. “Trading strengthened from the beginning of August as customers responded to additional promotional activity. UK like-for-like sales for the eight weeks from July 31 to the end of the half grew 6.4 per cent,” he said.

The retailer’s online sales are up 22 per cent on last year and Burke said that he was pleased with the initial response to the relaunch of the web site last month. The average bottle of wine purchased at Majestic Wine is£5.85, compared with£5.66 in 2006.
