Like-for-likes up 4.4%
Champagne corks were popping at Majestic Wine this Christmas, with like-for-like sales up 4.4 per cent for the nine weeks to January 1.

Majestic Wine chief executive Tim How said: 'We are pleased with our sales over the Christmas period. Wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Spain and New Zealand sold particularly well and champagne sales continued to grow strongly.'

The wine chain has 133 stores - up from 125 in 2005, with openings planned in Dulwich, Sonning, Aberdeen, Colchester and St Albans for the first half of 2007.

The retailer also revealed strong results for the five weeks to October 30, with like-for-likes up 4.3 per cent. For the 26 weeks to September 26, pre-tax profit increased 17 per cent to£6.5 million, compared with£5.5 million in 2005.

Total sales reached£88.3 million for the same period, against£80.8 million the year before. Like-for-likes for the same 26-week period rose 6.2 per cent, compared with 5.5 per cent in 2005.
