Majestic format trial to drive up spend

Majestic Wine is to test a new store type, including a dedicated fine wine centre, as it bids to push shopper spend higher.

The retailer will open the shop in St John's Wood, Northwest London, in July. The outlet will be twice the size of Majestic's average 3,000 sq ft (279 sq m) stores.

Majestic will also launch a transactional fine wine Web site to coincide with the opening of the new store. Chief executive Tim Howe believes the 107-strong chain can grow to 175 in the long-term.

Majestic's average customer spend has increased by£2 to£104 over the past 12 months.

Majestic announced preliminary profit, before tax and amortisation, up 37.9 per cent to£8.34 million for the year to March 31, 2003. Total sales climbed by 20.1 per cent to£125.7 million. In addition, UK like-for-like sales growth for the first 10 weeks of the financial year were up by 8.1 per cent.
