Sales at Liberty accessories brand Liberty of London reached £3.5 million for 2008 as it raised the curtain on its debut eponymous retail store.

The brand – part of Liberty, but wholesaled to the iconic Great Marlborough Street store – has more than 100 doors globally and reported sales up£2.2 million in the autumn/winter 2008 season.

Liberty of London creative director Tamara Salman told Retail Week that the performance indicates that the brand, despite remaining loss-making, is shaking off the gloom surrounding the retail sector.

She said the future of Liberty of London was “ separate” from the iconic retail store, which reported losses of£6.4 million in the year to December 31, 2007 – largely as a result of the cost of rolling out Liberty of London. “Liberty was the starting point and the inspiration [for Liberty of London], but it is quite separate,” she said.

Liberty has invested£3.6 million in the brand for the year to December 31, 2008, including the opening of the Sloane Street store in July. Salman said it will be the blueprint for more standalone stores and shop-in-shops in department stores.
