Privately-owned Toyworld is to open its biggest shop, in Leeds, as part of an expansion plan to increase store numbers by almost 50 per cent.
The retailer has 20 stores in the north of England and Scotland, including town centre premises and factory outlets. Chief executive Gary Sadler plans to open another eight stores next year.
The 10,000 sq ft (930 sq m) store on The Headrow will open before Christmas and replaces an existing store in the nearby Headrow Centre. The opening will help push turnover to an estimated£13 million in the year to February 2004.
Approximately£700,000 is being invested in the Leeds shop, which will help the retailer capitalise on the city's 'thriving growth', according to Sadler. He said: 'We are looking forward to cementing our position as the north of England's destination toy store.'
The store will cover two floors, with hobby and collectibles department Toyworld Hobbystore on the first floor. Sadler said: 'The megastore has been specifically designed to create a unique and exciting atmosphere, which will deliver a wow factor for parents and children alike.'
Toyworld was created in 1977 by Gary and Stuart Sadler, now buying director.
The first shop opened in Leeds, and the company also trades via the Web at toyworldstore.com.
