Sales up 10 per cent for week
Last-minute Valentine's Day purchases and good footfall over half term helped John Lewis department stores record sales growth of 10 per cent last week.

Sales were up 30 per cent on February 14 itself. Total sales reached£47 million for the week to February 17, with a fairly even spread of trade across the UK.

All directorates at the department store chain enjoyed good performances. Electricals and home technology took the top spot with year-on-year sales up 16.3 per cent.

The Valentine's gift rush also provided a significant boost to the partnership's supermarket division Waitrose. Sales were up 10.5 per cent to£73 million for the week.
