John Lewis Partnership's new strategy: Has Sharon White got it right?

Dame Sharon White

Today, John Lewis Partnership chair Dame Sharon White revealed her strategy for the bellwether retailer, following a £55m first-half loss. How will she save the business from the department store scrapheap?

The owner of the eponymous department stores and Waitrose grocery businesses has already disclosed a first-half loss of £55m. It was only the second time that the business had plunged into the red – the first was last year, when the Partnership losses were at a similar level.

While the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated the retailer’s difficulties, its problems predate the health emergency.
