Strong sales mark festive climb
John Lewis has started the countdown to Christmas with strong sales results for the week ending November 11.

Total store sales were up 12.4 per cent to£62.9 million and group sales increased by 12.1 per cent to£135.7 million. Online sales continued to soar with a 92.4 per cent increase in sales, compared to the same period last year.

Cooler conditions helped sales of furniture and textiles, in particular bedroom furniture, handmade carpets and linens. Furnishing accessories did well, with sales in the Christmas shop, gifts and cookshop picking up. Sales of electricals and home technology have also started their Christmas climb.

In womenswear, outerwear and accessories - such as scarves and gloves - were in demand. Men's accessories, branded casualwear and sports clothing also sold well. The greatest progress in childrenswear, toys and crafts came from nursery, babywear and toys.

John Lewis director of retail operations Gareth Thomas said: 'This week has started in fine style with a strong Sunday reflecting some determined Christmas shopping. We need£65 million this week just to match last year, while the turnover against us climbs to£70 million next week.'

The equivalent figure for Waitrose was a 12 per cent increase for the week ending November 11 and sales reached£72.6 million.
