Sales at department store chain John Lewis rose 8.2% last week to £52.6m, helped by a strong showing from home lines.

Turnover on home products, helped by special buy deals, climbed 13.9% in the period to July 24. Sales of beds and bedroom furniture rocketed by 36.9% and fitted furniture was ahead by 34.9%.

Fashion sales were up 11.2%, reflecting strong demand for boys’ clothes, men’s formal wear and jewellery.

John Lewis reported a “more challenging” week in electricals and home technology. Overall sales in the category fell 3.4% but large electrical sales rose 3.3% and small electrical goods were up 10.5%.

The Bluewater shop delivered the chain’s biggest sales rise – it was up 19.7%.

Online sales climbed 16.6%.

Turnover at sister grocery chain Waitrose was up 11.1% to £92.5m. Stores near holiday destinations generated “particularly strong” sales.
