Performance is 'encouraging'
The John Lewis Partnership has reported an 'encouraging' performance for the week ending April 1.

Sales at John Lewis Department Stores were up 18.9 per cent compared with the same week last year. After allowing for the distorted comparison with Easter and Mothers' Day last year, the group said the figures still represented a 'comfortable increase in turnover'.

Sales so far this year are up 10.9 per cent compared with last year. Stores in the South performed particularly well, with sales up 30 per cent in the London branches. Electricals, home and technology performed the best, rising by 40.6 per cent on a like-for-like basis.

Waitrose recorded a 21.9 per cent like-for-like increase in sales and said the milder weather had helped to bring trade back. For the year so far, sales are up by 8.3 per cent. Last-minute Mothers' Day purchases boosted the figures at both divisions.

John Lewis Direct, the group's online arm, continues to grow. Sales for the week were up 92.5 per cent, growing by 65.3 per cent on average for the year so far.
