World Cup helps drive sales again
Sales have picked up at John Lewis department stores, following its worst performance of the year last week.

Like-for-like sales increased by 11.9 per cent for the week ending June 17, compared with just a 4.6 per cent rise the previous week and an 11.2 per cent average for the year so far.

Father's Day, outdoor living and World Cup-themed products drove sales. The group said interest in flat-screen televisions continues, while womenswear and accessories sales took have taken a turn for the better.

A three-week summer clearance sale across all stores begins on July 1.

Summer weather and the World Cup continued to lift sales at supermarket chain Waitrose. Like-for-likes were up 12.7 per cent on last year, compared with an average of 9.8 so far this year.
