John Lewis in the frame for new Westgate

Capital Shopping Centres and LaSalle Investment Management are making a new attempt to extend the Westgate shopping centre in Oxford after earlier plans were rejected by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott. At the same time, the developers say initial discussions have taken place with the John Lewis Partnership for a full-line department store.

The planning application will take into account issues of design raised during the previous public inquiry and follow fresh consultations with Oxford City Council.

John Lewis Department Stores managing director Luke Mayhew said: 'We would like to open a store in Oxford. Although the discussions with CSC are at an early stage we think an enhanced Westgate Centre could provide a really good opportunity for a new John Lewis store.'
