Like-for-likes up 16.2 per cent
The clearance Sale drove performance at John Lewis department stores last week. Like-for-like sales were up 16.2 per cent, with double-digit increases every day other than Saturday. Sales for the week totalled£48.7 million.

Sales of flat-panel televisions were still strong since the World Cup and electricals and home technology sales were up 27.3 per cent on a like-for-like basis. Fashion and homewares also did well, both benefiting from the Sale and warm weather.

The clearance Sale ends this week and back-to-school trade will be its priority over the coming weeks.

Like-for-like sales at supermarket chain Waitrose rose 8.5 per cent, compared with an average increase of 10.2 per cent so far this year.

The grocer said the continuing hot weather would fully stretch its refrigeration and supply chain.
