1200 distribution staff face the axe as warehouses shut
Littlewoods Shop Direct is to slash 1,200 distribution jobs when it streamlines its warehouse operations.

Seven hundred workers in Wigan, 500 in Worcester and 40 in Eccles, Greater Manchester are set to lose their jobs next year.

The online retailer will re-locate operations to its most up-to-date distribution centre in Shaw, Oldham, where it hopes to create 300 jobs.

Retail workers' union Usdaw, which represents staff at the Wigan and Eccles sites, is holding urgent meetings with its members. A lack of investment and a decline in the home shopping market have been blamed for the closures.

Usdaw national officer Val Pugh said: 'Over the years there has been a lack of investment by GUS and a catalogue of errors by different management that has been a contributory factor to these proposed closures.'

The Barclay brothers-owned retailer operates a catalogue and online business. The group sold its 120-strong store portfolio to fashion group Primark for£409 million in July last year.
