Sports retailer JJB Sports is to trial a new-format store in November, as part of chief executive Chris Ronnie’s reinvigoration plan.

The store, in Manchester’s Trafford Centre, will reopen in the second week of November. It will have a mezzanine level and will be laid out by product category.

“At the moment, our stores are not clear in terms of where to go for different products. We want customers to be able to compare brands and decide what they want in one place,” Ronnie said.

Other plans at JJB include ditching its Adidas and Nike in-store shops and introducing more own brands. The retailer has recently signed a deal with Champion to stock its merchandise in the UK and is in negotiations with three other brands.

JJB will also relaunch its web site and explore the possibility of a mail-order business. JJB non-executive director David Jones will oversee the multichannel changes. JJB has also extended its partnership with Sky TV and now has three shopping channels.

“At the moment, our web site is not great, but there is a huge opportunity in online and mail order business,” said Ronnie. “We need to make our web site more customer-friendly in the same way that we will overhaul our stores. We need to make sure we are a multichannel retailer.”

JJB reported an adjusted pre-tax profit of£8.3 million for the 26 weeks to July 29 this year, down 58.3 per cent on the year before. Revenues dropped 4.3 per cent to£365.3 million and like-for-likes fell 4.4 per cent.

In the eight weeks to September 23, revenues rose 4.9 per cent and like-for-likes rose 5.2 per cent.
