Like-for-likes up 5.4 per cent
Sports retailer JJB unveiled satisfactory trading results, in line with company expectations, for the run-up to Christmas.

Like-for-like sales increased 5.4 per cent, with total revenue up 4.5 per cent, for the five weeks to December 31.

In the 22 weeks to December 31, like-for-likes rose 6.3 per cent and total revenue climbed 6 per cent.

According to the company, there has been significant improvement in its retail stores' gross profit performance, which includes stores that are part of combined health clubs/superstores. Replica products, particularly from Premiership football clubs and Glasgow Rangers, are selling very well.

Turnover for retail stores increased 3.5 per cent for the five weeks to December 31 and revenue for the 22 weeks to December 31 was 4.9 per cent ahead of the comparative period last year.

JJB health clubs continued to perform well, but planning and building delays resulted in new club openings being moved into 2007.

JJB non-executive chairman Roger Lane-Smith said: 'I believe that the progress we have made following the introduction of new distribution arrangements with Nike and adidas gives us the opportunity to further emphasise our Serious about Sport stance and that the continuing roll-out of combined health clubs/superstores will result in an increased contribution to profits from our leisure division.'
