Whelan says he did not renege on deal
JJB Sports founder Dave Whelan has emphatically rejected claims by the GMB union that the store group has reneged on a deal to end a warehouse workers' dispute.

The JJB boss contacted Retail Week to state his side of the case. He said: 'The management at JJB Sports has not gone back on a deal with the GMB workers.'

Whelan continued: 'JJB could not agree to the proposal that any grievances that were raised during the industrial dispute would be dropped, because it is a fundamental right of an individual to raise a grievance. We did, however, meet with those who had raised grievances and asked them if they would agree to drop their grievance.

'With regard to the dismissal of shop steward Chris Riley, I was not involved in the disciplinary process and the decision to dismiss Mr Riley was made after fair procedures had been followed.'
