Founder, Today Retail

What was your first job in retailing?

When I was 15, I had a Saturday job with Bejam (now Iceland) in Ealing.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

Dreams - starting up, developing a successful brand and becoming a market leader in less than 20 years is incredibly impressive.

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

I’m very positive, empowered and constantly seek improvement - if there was a trait I really didn’t like in myself, I would change it.

We all have that capacity.

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

I have been privileged to work with, and learn from, some highly talented and inspirational individuals. I also make an effort to learn from my own successes and setbacks.

What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?

Believe in yourself (even when things aren’t going your way), do your best, learn from your experiences and from those around you… and enjoy what you do.

What keeps you awake at night?

Occasionally, one or both of my four-year-old twin daughters. Otherwise, I sleep very well.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Developing and implementing new ideas, overcoming significant obstacles, and achieving my goals.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Starting Today Retail - I always wanted to start/run my own business. Becoming trading director at WHSmith would be a close second.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

Something where I was negotiating large deals or perhaps a racing driver.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

Selfridges - amazing innovative window displays and great product ranges.

What was your last purchase?

Asics Gel running trainers.
