Italian footwear giant Geox has kick-started ambitious UK expansion plans.

The retailer, which now has three stores in the country, intends to open a further four by the end of this year to put it on track to meet its target of 20 by the end of next year.

Geox opened its third store in Covent Garden last month – the second it has launched in the past three months.

It will open units at Westfield’s upcoming development at White City, the Trafford Centre in Manchester, The Oracle in Reading and on the King’s Road in Chelsea, west London.

Geox opened its first UK store at Bluewater in Kent in June last year.

The retailer also has plans to increase its presence in multi-brand stores and department stores. At present, Geox is sold in various footwear chains and independent retailers, including Russell & Bromley and Johnsons Shoes. The brand also has a children’s collection, Magic Geox, which is sold in One Small Step One Giant Leap and John Lewis.

Geox launched in 1995 and is sold in 68 countries worldwide. So far, it has adopted a more cautious approach to the UK market in comparison with other European countries. It attributes this to the greater costs involved in transporting goods across the Continent and the already crowded footwear scene. However, the retailer said that building a large UK base is a key strategic goal.

A Geox spokesperson said: “We wanted to concentrate on countries closer to Italy at first, but the UK is a big market and it has very high potential for great expansion.”
