Target has appointed its first chief risk and compliance officer almost a year after the retailer was rocked by a massive cyberattack.

The discount retailer was hit by a major cyberattack last year

The US retail giant was hit by the data breach around Black Friday last year, with thieves taking credit card numbers, names, phone numbers, home addresses and email addresses of up to 70 million of its customers.

Target has brought in General Motors chief compliance officer Jacqueline Hourigan Rice to the new role of senior vice-president, chief risk and compliance officer.

She will be responsible for corporate security, compliance and supplier management. Rice joins on December 1 and will report into Target chief executive and chairman Brian Cornell.

Rice is the second high-profile appointment in Target’s security division after the retailer appointed Brad Maiorino, previously chief information security and information technology risk officer at General Motors, to the newly-created role of chief information security officer in June.

Target operates 1,934 stores across the US and Canada.
