Metro has unified the structure of its Makro cash-and-carry operations in Spain and Portugal. The change is part of a strategy to build synergies and improve competitiveness. Makro Portugal has not reached its performance targets over the past few years and is coming under additional pressure from a tough economic environment.

From May 1 both organisations will be headquartered in Madrid under the leadership of José María Cervera, currently country manager of Makro Spain. Makro also plans to implement a new business model in Portugal based on a personalised service to customers, which has been key to success in Spain.
