Household and electronics goods retailer Harvey Norman has launched an Irish website offshore through which Australian consumers avoid paying the goods and service tax.

Harvey Norman chairman Gerry Harvey has expressed his concerns about the rise of international online shopping and its effect on the Australian retail market. He conceded the ‘direct import’ site, which sells only video games at present, would cannibalise the retailer’s bricks-and-mortar sales.
