Grocery market leader Edeka is considering expansion abroad with its recently strengthened Netto discount banner, The Financial Times Deutschland reported.

The retail group is said to be planning to open stores in foreign markets “in five years’ time at the latest”, preferably in Central and Eastern Europe but not necessarily in countries bordering Germany.

The plans come just a few years after Edeka withdrew from its foreign operating markets so it could focus its resources on its highly competitive domestic German market.
