Carrefour is understood to be planning to open dedicated sandwich and snack stores in France selling its Bon App’ product range.

Two shops are planned, the first of which is likely to open at a Paris transport hub next year according to French news service

Planet Retail analyst Gildas Aitamer believed the stores would probably be similar to rival Casino’s Dailymonop’ stores.

Carrefour has previously targeted the convenience food market with its Carrefour City Café model, but that did not perform as hoped.

Aitamer said: “This time, the retailer is trying a different approach, one similar to its Parisian Carrefour Bio concept store, which showcased its organic private label range. 

“The wider aim is likely to be raising awareness around its private label snacking range in an effort to boost its volumes.

“Higher-margin own brand products will be a major contributor to any profitability on this smaller format, enable better cost controls and will help to differentiate it from the competition.”

Retailers are increasingly targeting the French convenience food market. Marks & Spencer, for instance, is opening Simply Food stores in the country.
