International News - Modern look marks fresh ideas from Conforama

French furniture group Conforama will unveil a new look store in Paris this September. The retailer plans to capitalise on its position as world number two in furniture retailing by revitalising the chain as it expands across Europe.

A spokeswoman for Conforama, which is owned by Pinault-Printemps-Redoute, said: 'We are planning renovations in France and are looking to (install) a new image - more modern and more fashionable.'

She said the store image and logo would be designed to attract a new, younger generation of customers. An up-to- date logo would also be incorporated and supported by a fresh advertising campaign.

The retailer is already gauging consumer reaction to the planned new look, with tests in Pamplona in Spain and Albufeira in Portugal, which opened this month.

She said the full launch to press and investors would take place in the autumn in Colombes, Paris. The store will be the culmination of other elements that Conforama has been introducing to outlets across Europe.

The latest outlets are all receiving modernised layouts and products are organised into three main categories: furniture and decoration, household appliances and entertainment.

Conforama revealed last week that sales in the first half of this year increased by 2.9 per cent compared with the same period last year. Sales across the chain increased by 2.7 per cent to EUR1.3 billion (£920 million).
