International News - Carrefour sales soar beyond pundits' expectations

French colossus Carrefour has disclosed sales growth of 6.8 per cent for the second quarter - better than analysts had expected.

Carrefour, the world's second biggest retailer, revealed that sales climbed to EUR19.15 billion (£13.48 billion) compared with EUR18.62 billion (£13.1 billion) for the same period last year.

The store group was boosted by the timing of Easter this year, which added 1.2 per cent to sales. Like-for-likes increased by 3.6 per cent.

An aggressive store-opening programme continued during the quarter and Carrefour opened 352 shops in the first half. As well as focusing on ongoing expansion, the retailer is rolling out its No. 1 discount own-brand across all the countries in which it operates.

Separately, Carrefour has appointed Philippe Broianigo as chief executive officer of its Korean business.
