The BCSC, British Retail Consortium and British Property Federation have launched a joint campaign to raise awareness of the ways that landlords and retailers can prepare for a new carbon reduction scheme that is due to come into effect next year.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) will come into force in April 2010, from which point businesses will be required to determine their carbon emissions to prepare for the next phase of the scheme a year later, in which they will have to purchase allowances based on a figure of£12 per ton.

Eventually the scheme will lead to a league table of carbon winners and losers in which poorly performing businesses will be hit with an increase of up to 3 per cent in their energy bills.

The BCSC, BRC and BPF have published a guidance paper outlining how retailers and landlords can prepare for the new legislation, ahead of draft regulations that are to be produced by the Government later this year.
