Regent Street triggered the count down to Christmas when it switched on its lights at the weekend on Saturday.

The lights, which are sponsored by Dreamworks, depict characters from the new animated film Mr Peabody and Sherman, which is set to be released in February.

The all-day event included a series of fashion shows and live performances from Leona Lewis, Elia Doolittle, Gabrielle, Emma Bunton and Melanie C.

Deputy Lord Mayor of Westminster Cllr Robert Davis said: “The illumination of the Regent Street lights is an iconic moment in Westminster’s Christmas calendar. It heralds the start of the festive season for many, but importantly boosts businesses by attracting visitors from the UK and from abroad, as they come to the spectacular sight that is London’s West End.”

The Oxford Street Christmas lights will be turned on tonight by pop star Jessie J.
