Sainsbury’s ramps up plastic crackdown

Sainsbury’s has reduced plastic packaging on fresh flowers as part of its crackdown on plastic.

The grocer said more than 10 tonnes of plastic will be removed from 1 million bouquets across 167 stores.

Plastic sleeves will be removed and replaced with recyclable paper during a 12-week trial.

Sainsbury’s also plans to remove plastic bags from bakery sections, produce departments and online grocery deliveries in the coming weeks, while it is also launching a partnership with Tefal to allow shoppers to recycle used kitchenware.

The moves all form part of Sainsbury’s pledge to halve plastic by 2025 across its food operations.
