More than half of Amazon customers shopped using a mobile device over the Christmas period, the etailer reported in its round-up of holiday statistics.

The online giant said that on Cyber Monday, customers ordered more than 36.8 million items worldwide, equating to 426 items per second.

Between Thanksgiving (November 28) and Cyber Monday (December 2), Amazon customers ordered more than five toys every second from a mobile device.

Amazon also reported that more than one million customers around the world became new Prime members in the third week of December.

Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos said: “Amazon Prime membership continues to grow, and we now have tens of millions of members worldwide.”

The retailer had to limit new Prime membership signups during peak periods to ensure service to current members was not impacted by the surge in new membership.
