Heathrow Airport has reported a record retail sales of £1.7bn.

Stores at the transport hub enjoyed an 8.8% uplift collectively driven by customers from  Brazil, Russia, India and China purchasing big ticket items at an verage of £45.50 per head.

Clothing and accessories sales grew 17.7%.

Retail concessions director Muriel Zingraff said Heathrow has boosted its range of luxury brands including pop-up stores for brands inclduing Jack Wills, Chanel Watches, Ray-Ban, and Laduree as well as a new Miu Miu concession.

Zingraff said: “We now have passengers who are choosing to fly through Heathrow specifically to pick up items sold here and we have continued to witness a significant increase in demand for luxury goods from Chinese passengers as well as the Middle East with British brands such as Mulberry, Burberry and Smythson proving particularly popular. 

“As part of the modernisation and improvement of Heathrow we are continually seeking out new brands and retailers as well as developing new concept stores that we know will resonate with our target market.”
