The Works has reaffirmed its faith in physical books despite rising ebook sales.

The Works

The 305-store budget bookseller recorded a 6% rise in like-for-like sales in December, driven by a strong books performance. Ecommerce sales rocketed 300% while total revenues rose 9%.

Chief executive Kevin Keaney said: “While ebooks are an important consideration in our market, the numbers support our belief that there will always be a place for physical books.”

However, bookseller Foyles said sales of ebooks increased rapidly between December 1 and 24.

The retailer reported a “satisfactory” flat Christmas period. A weak performance at its flagship Charing Cross Road shop, affected by Crossrail work, was offset by strong trading at Westfield Stratford and its online store.

Entertainment retailer HMV is expected to update on Christmas performance this month. It said last month it is “probable” it will breach its banking covenants.
